Re-Orientations at La Esquina NYC (Winter - Spring 2019) Co-Curated with Natasha Stefanovic of Beautiful Things Curated
Re-Orientations at The Living Gallery, NYC (Fall 2019) Co-Curated with Anita Alvin Nilert of Art to Zebras, Produced by WCAPS
In Fall 2019, alt_break art fair partnered with Women of Color Advancing Peace and Security (WCAPS) and Art to Zebras to present Re-Orientations, featuring artists Samira Abbassy, Camille Eskell, Dhanashree Gadiyar and Sheida Soleimani. Previous to this sculpture and mixed-media exhibition, Re-Orientations, an exhibit featuring two-dimensional works by renowned contemporary artists Samira Abbassy, Camille Eskell, Dhanashree Gadiyar, and Sheida Soleimani, was shown Feb-March 2019 at La Esquina NYC.
Reflecting feminist voices with roots in the Near East and South Asia, Re-Orientations presented a feminist contrast to renowned scholar Edward Said’s “Orientalism”, drawing on the views of post-colonial women artists working across painting, photography and mixed media. Reflecting themes ranging from identity and immigration to domesticity, Re-Orientations mounted a humanizing, figurative approach in reconsidering contemporary approaches to a often overlooked region of the world. The exhibition was re-configured into a site-specific exhibition featuring sculpture and mixed-media work for a Fall 2019 presentation at The Living Gallery, 246 E 4th Street in Manhattan’s East Village.
