alt_break art fair 2018: GROUNDED
alt_break art fair 2018 takes the Earth’s natural resources as its focal point for our current iteration, GROUNDED. In our current climate of political turmoil, we seek ways to better root ourselves to our communities, find insights into our common ground and to protect the very ground beneath us. In an era denying the basic fact that climate change exists, a_baf continues seeking ways in which grassroots efforts can come together to make a positive impact on environmental stewardship.
This year’s iteration will be divided into two events: an interactive day of activities during Armory Week and an exhibition in early summer 2018 of artwork related to natural conservation. Activities exploring our relationship to the world around us and our interactions with one another will all take place on Sunday, March 11 at Independent Curator's International (ICI), 401 Broadway, and will include an interactive mask-making workshop, hosted in conjunction with MaskBook; postcard-making to support plastic bag ban efforts; and a mini anti-DAPL 'mirror shield' making workshop inspired by Cannupa Hanska Luger's Mirror Shield project.
We look forward to having you join us, and as always, all our programs are free and open to the public.
alt_break art fair 2017: United.
alt_break art fair 2017 is considering the need for communities to act in solidarity to ensure meaningful results for positive change in our current political climate with our 2017 theme: United. To this end, we are establishing dialogue firmly rooted in both the artistic and social justice communities by incorporating voices from art and activism across the spectrum.
Our panels will explore the ability for arts and activism to positively impact immigrant communities with our panel in partnership with Upwardly Global (Thurs, 3/2 at 6:15 pm) while we'll broaden the discussion around intersectional feminism with a panel discussion in partnership with Rush Arts gallery and Art in Flux (Sat, 3/4 2-4 pm).
Please consider coming out to join the conversation and learn more about these initiatives. Panels are free and accessible to the public; refreshments provided following the panel conclusion.

ALT_BREAK ART FAIR LAUNCHED IN 2016>>>>
Welcome to alt_break art fair's inaugural theme for 2016: SHIFT_
SHIFT_ points to a new spin on the contemporary art fair, occurring during the Armory Art Fair week (March 3-6) and taking as its focus the meaningful impact of social justice and community building nonprofits located in the vicinity of existing fairs such as the Armory, Art on Paper, Scope, and Spring/Break. Proving that relevant contemporary art transcends the boundaries of traditional art fair spaces, alt_break 2016: SHIFT_ presents site-activated exhibits incorporating paintings, sound installation, performance, and mixed media art. Curator-driven, alt_break's team of 4 seasoned curators align their exhibits with the mission of the host site of their partner nonprofit organization, working with artists whose work resonates these values. This multi-site fair deftly expands to incorporate nonprofit sites as vital centers of creative impetus while inviting the view to shift their perspective while physically shifting from one site to another.
SHIFT_ indicates alt_break's position as a newly-created art fair standing apart from the traditional art fair model, dedicating resources to expanding audiences and funding models: 25% of income from fair activities are donated equally to our partner sites. Equal rights, social justice, opportunities for minorities and empowerment for marginalized communities are some of the values our partner nonprofits fight to preserve. Contemporary art is harnessed here as a powerful agent of social change: and socially focused nonprofits and the art world, communities existing in parallel but traditionally separate, are both served and invited to contemplate and activate these sites in their own ways. SHIFT_ allows new streams of dialogue on what art can mean as a catalyst for change. With our first iteration of alt_break art fair, we are inviting new considerations of human rights by situating art within a space that can, and is, inhabited by all who seek it.
